Going into the 2010-11 NFL betting season, the Kansas City Chiefs shocked their fans and critics around the league by only making changes to the team’s coaching staff as opposed to the roster. As a result, many fans and critics decided to bet against the team en route to what they believed would be another season without the playoffs. Instead, as Sunday showed all of us, the Chiefs are a vicious team. Although they clinched their first AFC West title in seven years, they did so with some help from an unlikely team, the Cincinnati Bengals.
This offseason, the only moves that the Kansas City Chiefs made, were to the team’s coaching staff. The team hired former Notre Dame Fighting Irish and former New England Patriot offensive coordinator Charlie Weis to run the Chiefs offense. On the other side of things, the Chiefs also added Wise’s Patriots coaching staff member Romeo Crennel.
The two moves proved to be worthwhile, as the Chiefs of 2010-11 shocked the rest of the NFL and won the AFC West for the first time in seven years. On the field, the Chiefs were one of the big surprises of 2010. They have the potential to end the season with a record of 11 wins and five losses, their first winning season in almost five years. Secondly, they won the last two games under the guidance of quarterback Matt Cassel.
Cassel the former New England Patriots backup quarterback, had appendectomy surgery three weeks ago, and has returned to throw for over 300 yards and seven touchdowns in the last two weeks alone. Cassel has shown that the Chiefs offense is just as good as the defense. In their last two games, the Chiefs offense has exploded for almost 75 points. At this rate, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility to believe that they could do well in the playoffs.
