When betting on any sport, it is crucial when evolving from a new bettor to a more experienced bettor, that you create a betting system to use strategically. Since the NFL is perhaps the most popular form of sports gambling, developing a system can be the difference between making the occasional bet because you consistently lose, and making regular bets because your system is allowing you to win the most wagers.
Today we look at the point differential system, a common betting tactic used by many NFL bettors. Essentially the prime principle behind the PDS is analyzing the strength of teams your team has played against. By doing so we avoid placing our team’s offense in comparison with the league average as it is misleading. Below are three steps used to establish a point differential system by calculating the odds.
A) Listing Opponents – Going into a match, it is important to calculate the total points of your opponent to that date and the amount of points they have given up in that time. For example, the Cincinnati Bengals are at the Cleveland Browns for a week seven match up. Going into the game, the Bengals have scored 104 points and given up 148. As a result they have 17.33 points for and 24.66 points.
B) Total number – Essentially we would add up the points for and against of the Bengals and their opponents average scores per game and divide it by the total number of games played. This will give an average for points for and points against in that time frame.
C) Add the Averages – As the step suggests, add the two final averages from the total number calculations, to get an overall number of points for the Bengals.
