While fans of sports betting have bemoaned the fact that the top pick in the NFL Draft in recent years has been signed to a contract before the official start of the draft, it does not appear to be in the cards for this year.
Observers cite the fact that such a practice tends to kill the drama usually associated with the NFL Draft, and that there should be a return to the way things were. It appears as though Kevin Demoff, the Rams’ executive vice-president of football operations, agrees.
Last month at the owners meetings, Demoff asserted his position that the Rams did not feel it was important to have a pick signed before the draft. He reiterated the club’s position on Sunday.
“There’s still three months essentially before the start of training camp to get a person under contract. We want to make sure we spend our time, and make the right deal for the Rams and a fair deal for the player.” Demoff has referenced “four candidates” when talking about the Rams’ number one pick, specifically those players identified by general manager Billy Devaney at the NFL scouting combine as “finalists” for the Rams’ number one pick. Fans of online sports betting know those players as quarterback Sam Bradford of Oklahoma, quarterback Jimmy Clausen of Notre Dame, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh of Nebraska, and defensive tackle Gerald McCoy of Oklahoma.
Demoff dismissed the assertion that the Rams are just biding time, waiting for the pick on Thursday. Rather, he indicated the team has been in touch with players since the combine, and are engaged in an exhaustive decision-making process.
“I have a sense of where all the numbers would come in and what everybody’s asking for. So it’s not as if we haven’t given this any thought. We’re doing the proper due diligence before the draft. We’ll know when we take someone kind of what their expectations are.”
The NFL Draft takes place on Thursday.
