February may be one hardest months to get through for some, but not because of the cold weather or gray skies. Instead, February brings with it the end of the National Football League Season, and the longest waiting period until more football action.
Fans now eagerly await the combine and the draft in the spring, and continue to count the day until training camp starts. And before you know it, it’s the pre season and life is back to normal.
It’s never too early to start getting geared up and looking at what teams and players are doing to improve and make a run at the championship next year. If history has shown us anything, it’s that any team can rise to the top in any year; there are always surprises in a league defined by parity.
Look for one team in particular to make a much stronger appearances in 2010. The first is the Chicago Bears. A long, rough season was defined by the inconsistent play of quarterback Jay Cutler and running back Matt Forte. The outspoken and erratic Cutler continued his old ways of taking gambles and making ill advised throws. But his play came on in the second half of the season, and despite the interceptions, he was still a touchdown machine. His play will improve under the tutelage of new offensive coach Mike Martz, who turned the St. Louis offence around years ago.
Forte meanwhile, after a breakout rookie season, suffered from the sophomore slump. There is no reason to suspect he can’t break out of his funk as the team gels together and as key players return from injury. He is fast and agile, and will be underrated coming into the season. If one of their young wideouts can step up, or if the Bears can make a trade, look for their offense to explode.
It’s early, but it’s worth a shot putting some money down on the Bears. If Favre retires, the Vikings are weakened, putting in the division with either the Bears or the Packers.
